abstract
  • Singer and lyricist (born 31 January 1956 in London, UK).Best known for his work as lead singer initially of the Sex Pistols (using the name Johnny Rotten), then secondly under his real name in Public image Limited (or %22PIL%22 for short). His work with the Sex Pistols is recognised as being the lead UK band for the emerging late-1970's punk scene, especially in the UK. Continually throughout his career, has been very outspoken about his dislike for so-called authority figures or institutions; whether monarchy, political, or religious. Most of his tracks have featured his objections vehemently to these and other issues. When appearing with bandmates on British TV in the late 1970's to early 1980's, usually had little time for the presenters; often walking out halfway through any interview, due to being paraded as some kind of hate figure. In the early 1980's he was forced to leave the UK after repeated raids by the Police on anywhere he and band PIL tried to play. This unfair and unlawful intrusion by another state institution that at the time could get away with such malicious actions, meant moving to the US for the following 25 years, where he could live and work normally. He continues to live in Los Angeles, USA. As of early 2010, currently re-touring with a reformed PIL. Married to Nora Forster, stepfather to singer Arianne Foster (aka Ari-Up), and brother of Jimmy Lydon.

  • John Joseph Lydon (born 31 January 1956), also known by his former stage name Johnny Rotten, is an English singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the lead singer of the punk rock band Sex Pistols from 1975 until 1978, and again for various revivals during the 1990s and 2000s. He is the lead singer of the post-punk band Public Image Ltd (PiL), which he founded and fronted from 1978 until 1993, and again since 2009.There has been a recent revival of a 1980s movement to have Lydon knighted for his achievements with the Sex Pistols — even though he has declined efforts to award him an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. In 2002 he was named among the 100 Greatest Britons following a UK-wide vote. Q Magazine remarked that %22somehow he's assumed the status of national treasure.%22Lydon's image and fashion style led to him being asked to become the singer of the Sex Pistols by their manager, Malcolm McLaren. With the Pistols, he penned singles including %22Anarchy in the U.K.%22, %22God Save the Queen%22 and %22Holidays in the Sun%22, the content of which precipitated the %22last and greatest outbreak of pop-based moral pandemonium%22 in Britain. The band caused nationwide uproar in much of the media, who objected to the content of Lydon’s lyrics, and their antics, which included swearing on live television, in which Steve Jones called Bill Grundy a %22fucking rotter%22. Due to the band's appearance in the media, Lydon was largely seen as the figurehead of the punk movement in the public image although this idea was not widely supported amongst the punk movement itself. Despite the negative reaction that they provoked, they are now regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of popular music.Lydon left the Pistols in 1978 to found his own band, Public Image Ltd, that was far more experimental in nature, and which has been described as %22arguably the first post-rock group%22. Although never as commercially successful as the Pistols, the band produced eight albums and a string of singles, including %22Public Image%22, %22Death Disco%22, and %22Rise%22, before they went on hiatus in 1993, reforming in 2009. In subsequent years, Lydon hosted a number of television shows in the UK, US, and Belgium, as well as writing two autobiographies: Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs (1993), Anger is an Energy (2014), and producing some solo musical work, such as the album Psycho's Path (1997). In 2005 he released a compilation album, The Best of British £1 Notes.
